What VO₂max tells you about endurance.

The heart, lungs, blood and muscles must work together during exercise. VO₂max represents this chain in one measurement, but it does not by itself explain why someone is faster in competition or can sustain a particular pace for longer.

Training practice

The number needs a sporting context.

In addition to maximal oxygen uptake, ventilatory thresholds, heart-rate response and perceived exertion are often relevant to training plans. Repeat measurements are only readily comparable if the protocol and testing conditions remain similar.

For VO₂max testing, the choice of investigations depends on your history, current training, symptoms and personal goal. More data are not automatically better; what matters is whether a result is understandable, reliable and useful in practice.

Measurements are therefore not assessed in isolation. Progress over time, day-to-day condition, training phase, medications and methodological limitations all need to be considered before a recommendation is made.

Can VO₂max results from different devices be compared directly?

Only to a limited extent. Measurement methods, exercise protocols and analysis can cause differences. Similar conditions are preferable when tracking changes over time.
