What question should the second opinion answer?
Write down your main question in one sentence: Does the proposed shoulder operation match my symptoms? What options are available before knee replacement? Or is there still no clear explanation for my loss of function? A specific question helps the practice identify the appropriate appointment.
Also note what you want to be able to do again at home, at work or in sport. A functional treatment goal is more useful than simply wanting an MRI scan to look normal. This article explains preparation; suitable treatment must be assessed in the context of your individual situation.
Records: bring both images and reports
Have existing consultation and operation reports, the actual imaging files with their reports, and a medication and allergy list available. The AAOS recommends this preparation for orthopedic visits. Ask the practice which files are needed for your particular question.
A useful filing system is a list showing the date, examination and treating provider. Before travelling, check that your image files or access link can actually be opened. Do not arrange a new MRI solely for the appointment on your own initiative; discuss whether it is needed first.

Make an initial inquiry, then agree secure record transfer
In your first inquiry, state the body region, purpose of the visit, where you live, possible dates and preferred consultation language. Do not include a detailed medical history or records in an unsecured first message. Agree the intended transfer method first.
If you are coming from Austria or Switzerland, check the specific record and billing requirements. When travelling from Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait or Egypt, also confirm which translations and language support will actually be available during the visit. An Arabic website does not mean an interpreter has been booked.
Which costs should you clarify beforehand?
Ask which services are planned for your appointment and what they are expected to cost. Request separate explanations of consultation fees, any additional diagnostic tests and a written report if required. A possible later operation is a separate treatment step, not an assumed part of a consultation booking.
Germany's statutory second-opinion programme applies to specified procedures and authorised doctors. A private second opinion is not automatically part of that programme. Check eligibility and reimbursement with the practice and insurer beforehand. Any foreign insurance policy or payment authorisation needs to be checked against the agreed service.

Confirm the appointment before arranging your stay
Confirm the date, time and exact examination location before purchasing non-refundable tickets. The practice location stated on this website is OrthoCenter Munich, Maximilianstraße 10. Discuss beforehand whether any further examinations may require a different location.
Do not plan a consultation as though surgery has already been scheduled. The discussion may lead to further assessment, non-operative treatment or a surgical recommendation. A travel booking is not a medical reason to rush a decision. Check visa and entry requirements with the relevant official authorities; an appointment does not guarantee a visa.
What needs to be clear before you leave?
At the end of the visit, note the recommendation, unresolved questions and next step. Ask whether a summary can be provided and in what form. For continuing care at home, establish who should receive the findings and which follow-up appointments have actually been agreed.
If surgery is planned, follow-up, possible complications and fitness to travel require individual discussion. Surgery and prolonged air travel can increase the risk of blood clots. There is no blanket promise about when you can fly home; the treating clinicians must assess this for your procedure and health.
Do not wait for travel when symptoms need urgent care
Sudden severe shoulder pain, inability to move the arm, persistent numbness or major swelling after an injury need urgent local assessment. Do not postpone this to attend a later second-opinion appointment. For a medical emergency in Germany, call 112.
Frequently asked questions
Can I first ask whether I need to attend in person?
Yes. Before a long journey, clarify whether your question is suitable for an initial review of existing records. An inquiry does not replace an examination or guarantee that a diagnosis can be made remotely.
Do overseas reports need to be translated?
Ask beforehand which language and extent of translation are needed. Do not commission translation of your entire file without checking. Images should remain clearly linked to their corresponding reports.
Are consultation, surgery and follow-up one package?
Not automatically. Scope, costs and responsibilities are agreed for the services actually arranged. A second opinion neither commits you to surgery nor guarantees a particular outcome.
